The Power of Analytics & Generative AI in Marketing: My Journey from Commerce to Data-Driven Marketing

Introduction: A Commerce Mindset Meets Marketing Innovation

Numbers have always been my stronghold. Coming from a commercial background, I’ve always made decisions based on data, facts, and financial analysis.

Above all, during my academic years, I had a significant interest in accounting and financial analytics, which led me to prepare for the CA Foundation. However, due to health difficulties, I was forced to leave CA and seek an MBA in Marketing and Finance—a decision that unintentionally set me on the path of data-driven marketing.

However, after completing my MBA, I accepted a sales career in the building materials industry. While sales was an interesting and hard job, my analytical mind was always looking for data-driven insights to help guide decisions.

But I was interested in more than just closing deals; I wanted to know why customers made certain decisions, how statistics could predict purchase trends, and how businesses could utilise analytics to maximise marketing efforts.

This curiosity prompted me to investigate the potential of marketing analytics and AI, particularly Generative AI, which is changing the way businesses approach consumer engagement, customisation, and campaign optimisation. I’m currently learning marketing analytics and artificial intelligence in preparation for a job in data-driven marketing.

Why Analytics & AI Are Reshaping Modern Marketing

Marketing is more than just innovation; it is also about precision, prediction, and personalisation. Data analytics and AI enable businesses to maximise ROI, improve consumer engagement, and make smarter decisions.

Data-Driven Decision Making:

Instead of relying on intuition, modern marketing is a data-driven discipline.

Businesses utilise analytics to:

✔️ Identify customer behaviour patterns and predict future trends.
✔️ Optimise ad spend by identifying campaigns with the highest ROI.
✔️ Use audience segmentation to provide tailored content.

📊 Companies use predictive analytics to target clients who are more likely to convert, resulting in increased marketing efficiency.

Generative AI represents the future of customized marketing:

Generative AI has improved marketing automation, scalability, and intelligence. Artificial intelligence applications can:

🤖 Create material rapidly, such as blog posts, ad copy, and product descriptions. Personalise email marketing with client data. Enhance consumer interactions with AI chatbots and recommendation systems.

📊 Platforms like ChatGPT, Jasper AI, and Google’s Bard can create personalised ad texts tailored to certain audience demographics, increasing engagement and conversion rates.

How I Started Understanding the Importance of Data in Marketing

Throughout my career in sales, I repeatedly learnt that traditional selling techniques were no longer successful. Customers were more knowledgeable than ever before, and their purchasing decisions were influenced by online research, reviews, and digital interactions.

That’s when I started exploring:

✔️ Utilise CRM analytics to identify consumer preferences and habits.
✔️ Use Google Analytics and SEO stats to learn how data impacts internet exposure.
✔️ Marketing automation tools enable customised consumer experiences at scale.

As I dug more, I saw that marketing is more than just selling; it’s about leveraging data to create purposeful, impactful, and customer-focused experiences.

I’m currently learning marketing analytics, data visualization, and AI-powered marketing in preparation for a complete shift to data-driven marketing.
